The ancient church dedicated to St Michael de Rupe stands atop Brentor, a volcanic outcrop just a short stroll from Monkstone. There are numerous legends and myths about this isolated peak; the spectacular views from the top over West Devon, Dartmoor and East Cornwall are well worth the short but steep climb, especially at sunset. |
Just 3 miles to the north lies the pretty village of Lydford, with its Norman castle keep, and the Saxon Castle Inn, which offers bar meals and restaurant dining.
Below the village, in a deep gorge, the river Lyd tumbles through a succession of potholes, waterfalls and tranquil pools. In summer visitors to Lydford Gorge can explore the deepest parts of the gorge along parapet paths and suspended walkways. There is easier access to the White Lady Fall, where a small stream joins the main river.
At each end of the gorge refreshments and cream teas are available in season. |

From Monkstone, which lies just on the edge of the Dartmoor National Park, there is access to miles of open countryside, for walking, hiking and riding. Rugged tors and deep valleys punctuate the moorland landscape, with peaceful villages, quiet lanes and the remnants of the past mining heritage to explore.
5 miles to the south lies the bustling market town of Tavistock, offering a wide range of shops, pannier market, farmers' market, entertainment at the Wharf, and leisure facilities at Meadowlands Pool. |
Tavistock is the birth place of Sir Francis Drake, and his later residence at Buckland Abbey is a short drive down the Tavy valley. This area is rich in mining heritage - at Morwellham Quay the Victorian port and mine has been restored and opened to the public. A little further away the village of Calstock lies on the Cornish side of the river Tamar, accessible by ferry from Morwellham in the summer. Just downstream from Calstock can be found the medieval house at Cotehele. |

Further afield both the north and south coasts are easily reached by car, and the Eden Project is just one hour's drive away. |
